About the event

Stories of Stagville Women: Researching the Lives of Enslaved Women on the Cameron Properties

Historic Stagville site manager Vera Cecelski will share research about enslaved women's families, labor, freedom seeking and resistance. Among others, you'll discover the remarkable stories of Mary Walker and Phoebe Bennehan. Two enslaved women with Raleigh connections. By 1860, Stagville was part of a vast plantation where the Bennehan and Cameron heirs enslaved over nine hundred people of African descent. Historic Stagville State Historic Site now inspires new understanding about the history of slavery through preservation, research, genealogy, and descendant engagement.
